A black cab from Birmingham Airport uses Birmingham City Council’s hackney-carriage tariff, so there is no guaranteed airport-to-city-centre price. The meter reflects distance, waiting time and the tariff in force. No booking is required for the airport’s official black-taxi rank; ask for an estimate before setting off.
How Birmingham black-cab fares work
Birmingham City Council’s official fare table, effective 1 April 2025, publishes three meter tariffs. After the initial meter allowance, the distance rates are equivalent to £2.04, £2.31 and £3.07 per mile respectively. These equivalents do not turn a trip into a simple mileage calculation because waiting time and tariff changes can affect the meter.
| Tariff | When it applies | Published distance-rate equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Tariff 1 | Standard periods shown on the council fare table | £2.04 per mile after the initial allowance |
| Tariff 2 | Friday and Saturday 22:00–07:00, plus specified festive periods | £2.31 per mile after the initial allowance |
| Tariff 3 | The special periods specified on the official table | £3.07 per mile after the initial allowance |

The official Birmingham Airport taxi rank
Birmingham Airport identifies Complete Taxi Management UK as its official black-taxi supplier and says passengers do not need to book: go directly to the taxi rank. See the airport’s official taxi information for current arrangements.
The airport page does not substantiate the old guide’s precise route totals, queue-time claims or all of its vehicle and payment assertions, so those claims have been removed.
What should you budget to Birmingham city centre?
A precise fare cannot be calculated responsibly from miles alone. The final meter can change with the actual route, traffic, waiting time and applicable tariff. Ask the rank driver for an estimate before departure. If cost certainty matters, compare that estimate with a complete quote from a licensed private-hire operator.
A private-hire booking may offer a fixed price, but it is not automatically cheaper than a black cab. Check whether the quote includes airport pickup, parking, waiting, flight delays and the vehicle required.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a black cab from Birmingham Airport?
There is no guaranteed airport route price in Birmingham City Council’s fare table. The black cab uses the regulated meter, so ask for an estimate and expect distance, traffic, waiting time and tariff to affect the total.
Are Birmingham Airport black-cab fares fixed?
No. Rank black cabs use Birmingham City Council’s metered hackney-carriage tariff. A licensed private-hire operator can instead provide a quote before booking.
Where do I get a black cab at Birmingham Airport?
Birmingham Airport says no booking is required for its official black-taxi supplier; passengers can go directly to the taxi rank. Check the airport’s current transport page for pickup arrangements.
When does Birmingham Tariff 2 apply?
The council table applies Tariff 2 on Friday and Saturday from 22:00 to 07:00 the next day and during specified festive periods. Consult the official table because Tariff 3 applies in additional special periods.
Is private hire cheaper than an airport black cab?
Not always. Compare the actual complete private-hire quote with the black-cab estimate and consider booking flexibility, pickup arrangements and included charges.
Summary
Birmingham Airport black cabs use the council meter rather than a guaranteed city-centre fare. Use the official fare table to understand the tariff, ask the rank driver for an estimate and compare a complete licensed private-hire quote if you want a price agreed before travel.
